Superfluous Face

So yeah, we haven’t recorded a podcast in about a month. Bad news is, this isn’t a new podcast. Good news is, thanks to James, Episode 9 was resurrected almost literally from the dead. This is kinda a rough cut, the info and news we cover is pretty old, but as always with us, it’s still funny.

I’m a Mac, and I’m a money pit…

Also known as “Why all my money has gone to Apple recently.”

A couple months ago I got a free laptop from work. It was a little old, run down and bulky, but hey it was free, and I was in need. I already had a desktop at the house that I really didn’t use all that much b/c it was crippled by Windows Vistas. When they offered me the free one I jumped at the chance to have a mobile PC again, and better yet one with XP loaded.

However here we are months down the road, and the once great laptop, is now a 7lb paperweight sitting on my hearth at the house. As some of you may have read, mid edit of 3SMOV Radio Episode 9… it died. Got the ol’ “Blue Screen of Death” and shut down. Now I have been dealing with PCs most of my life and am pretty used to getting such an error. I didn’t think much of it really and restarted the computer. Much to my dismay, it still didn’t come back on. Several more attempts and nothing. Much like trying to give CPR to an already dead pet, I was just making myself more upset each time it failed to come back to life. Though this is more like a pet that you didn’t really raise all it’s life, kinda like one a neighbor let you have after they moved, and it always chewed on your shoes, and shit in the bed. I was kinda pissed that it died the way it did, but I honestly can’t say it will be missed all that much.

My first thought was to replace the HDD and just make it work. Then I started to do research, for a couple hundred dollars I could get it up and running again, but really, for how long. Why should I pump money into a piece of machinery that I never really cared about or paid for in the first place. It will just turn around and crap on the floor again no matter how many times I rub it’s face in it. So that was when I came to the realization that, I’m Done! No more PCs for me, and yes I will site examples of why.

My wife has been working in the school system for about seven years. The past four she has worked in a particular section of the state that gives each teacher a MacBook to use. She has had the same MacBook that entire time. She has never had an issue with it. Never a virus, never had anything crap out on her with it. The only problem that she has had recently is that the battery doesn’t hold a charge anymore. The only reason she hasn’t replaced it, is because the school won’t do it. They are too cheap, and we ARE in a recession.

Meanwhile since she got that computer I have gone through two different PCs. CONSTANTLY updating it with random dumbass updates from Windows. Not to mention the ridiculous hassle that is Vistas. Nothing says forward thinking like releasing an OS only to totally leave it behind and abandon it two years later.

Also I don’t need 200+ programs preloaded on my PC that I will NEVER USE. Most of which are memory hogs and drag my PC into the dirt every time I turn it on. I don’t consider myself an Apple fanatic, but I have definitely been converted to the Apple way of thinking and business ethics.

I am not under the delusion that Apple is the greatest company on the planet and has a “People First” mantra. Anyone that does think that, needs only to look at the fact that they release a new version of the iPod and iPhone about twice a year. . . Speaking of which . . .

Sweet New Toy

Sweet New Toy

I just put in my pre-order for the new version of the iPhone 3GS. I have been using my iPod Touch over the past nine months religiously. Twitter, Facebook, 50+ apps, Safari, you name it, I use it. I love that little thing. Being that my Verizon Wireless account is up for renewal shortly, I took another leap. I hate to leave VZW because their coverage really is second to none. However their customer service and their phones, UI, pricing, and pretty much everything else is just simply the pits.

I have also been a LONG TIME user of Verizon. Put it this way, I was with them before they were even Verizon. Back in the days when they were still GTEmobile. They have always been a thorn in my side that I have just ignored for years. I am not really sure what pushed me over the edge with them to make me finally switch. Maybe it’s the fact that for the wife and I, we pay around $115 for just our two cellphones and the service to go along with them. We have a 700 min contract and NEVER get close to it, but will they let us take it down, or give us a price break, hell no. Switching to AT&T, I will be on a 550 min plan (with roll over) the data plan for my iPhone ($30, something i never had with VZW for $40) and the extra line for my wife with 200 txt mgs for her. Grand total with the extra line, data plan, and all the extras we still end up saving $5 over Verizon.

Lame!

Lame!

A prime example of how Verizon’s customer service sucks: I talked to a CSR for about 20 mins on Wednesday about TERMINATING my contract with them. I asked about the termination fee, when I could actually do it without penalty, all that. Then at the end of the conversation, she has the balls to ask me “What can I help you purchase today?” Lady, are you fucking kidding me? Why after the conversation we just had would you EVER think that I would like to buy something from you? Seriously?!??! Had she actually tried to save me as a customer I might have thought about it. The issue is that Verizon has gotten so big that it has “forgotten where they came from” so to speak. They don’t care about the people that helped them get to where they are now. Make money and screw over those that you trampled under foot to get to the top.

Sweet New Toy 2!

Sweet New Toy 2!

So now that I have placed my order for my new MacBook Pro, I will sit back and wait for the sweet, sweet goodness to roll in. If I played my cards right I should be getting my lappy and my iPhone around the same day. If that is true listen close the rest of the week and you might hear me scream out in a childishly, girlie squeal at their un-boxing. Granted there will be an adjustment phase that I will have to go through coming from an almost strictly PC only basis. However given the track record of Apple computers lasting as long as they do and rarely giving people the hassle that a PC does, I think it will be worth it. Can’t wait to start posting and editing and everything else from my new Mac!

iDracula (iPhone/iPod Touch)

0

After downloading just about every free and “Lite” App on iTunes i was ready for a change. I finally figured that if i was going to get anything decent, i would probably have to pay for it. I checked through the “Top 25 Paid Apps” and came across iDracula. It was only 99cents and looked like it could be fun for a while, so i thought, why not.

iDracula is a top down “dual stick” shooter for the iPhone and iPod Touch. You play the part of an un-named Vampire hunter, and your only job at the moment is to survive waves of enemies. You will have to fight off Werewolves, Ghosts, strange alien like creatures, and even Dracula himself.

At your disposal is a range of six different weapons, not necessarily what you might think would be in a Dracula game. Sure there is the crossbow, the pistol, and rifle, but much more powerful weapons as well. You also can get your hands on the grenade launcher, Gatling gun, and even the BFG. Weapons do NOT have infinite ammo however so you do have to use them sometimes sparingly in order to keep alive.

Taking a cue from most modern first person shooters, iDracula also features a “Perk System”. Make enough kills and score enough points and you will unlock several different “Perks”. Some are very useful, such as the “Bonus Finder” which raises the chance of bonuses being dropped by your dead enemies, or “Telekinesis” which will drag the bonuses on the ground closer to you so that you can pick them up easier. However there are some “Perks” that are a bit of a let down. Like “Immortality” which will render you invincible, but you die in twenty seconds, which i haven’t figured out why that is even in there.

At the moment there are only two different modes of play, “Survival” and “Rush”. Survival pits your character against hordes of creatures that get harder and harder as time passes. They never really let up on you but constantly keep coming and in increasing numbers. Rush mode drops your Vampire hunter into the fray with a Gatling Gun and infinite ammo, however the enemies are “rushing” you in almost insurmountable numbers. There is apparently another mode in the works but no word on what that might be.

The controls for the game are very simple to pick up and get used to. The bottom left and right corners of the touch screen act as your left and right analog sticks. The left side moves the player around and the right stick fires your weapon of choice in the direction you point. You can set the controls to either auto select the best weapon (which is probably the best) or you can choose the weapon on your own.

The downside to this game is there is only one level to look at while you are playing. That too is going to change in the new future according to the developers. Two more levels are being worked on, as well as new creatures, and a new weapon. The price too is going to go up once the patch is released with the new add-ons. No info on what it may increase to, but at the moment it is still the 99cents.

All in all this game is very well put together. The animations are very smooth, the sound is great, especially with headphones on. My one gripe is the music is a little on the repetitive side, with only one song and it does get old during marathon matches. For the price it’s a great alternative to all the Tower Defense games out there for the iPhone and iPod Touch. At only 99cents you can’t beat it, and if the developer delivers on what is promised and raises the price with the patch, it is probably best to get in on the ground floor.

Twitter

2

Over the past several months i have developed  a rather unhealthy addiction to twitter. Recently i think i came across the reason for my own addiction and quit possibly for others as well.

Twitter makes us feel important. For many reasons twitter can make a person feel like they are not just some random speck on the planet. Probably the easiest to see is the connection to people that you wouldn’t normally have the chance to talk to. Celebrities have started Twitter accounts just to let fans know what they are doing on a run of the mill day. Those fans them get the updates and feel as though said celebrity is talking directly to them. It makes a person feel like they are friends with the people they idolize so much.

Second,Twitter gives just about anyone an unsilence-able voice. That second amendment right that peo! ple have literally died for is right there for you to use. Want to praise the new President, can’t wait to lay into Brendan Fraser for his recent flop at the theater, or want to send your wife a quick romantic note, it’s all possible. If you can get a point across in 140 characters or less you can find your audience.

Which brings me to the next point, people (may) actually listen to you. Drop an opinion on music and someone could counter your point, or support you. Find your next best friend or your greatest enemy all with one simple program. Follow the people that you want to follow, don’t bother with the ones you don’t. If some guy keeps yammering on about how smart his cats are and you don’t like it, drop him like a bad habit. or tell him yours are smarter. The choice is all up to you.

Most importantly Twitter is all about “Social Networking”. You can find people from all walks of life on twitter, talking on an on over just about anything. Since I have been using it, I have made several new acquaintances. Most of which have helped me start and/or promote the website you are reading this article on right now. It’s amazing that you can still find helpful people in the world. Twitter just made it that much easier to communicate to one another. Not to mention the fact that some people you follow drop nuggets of useful information every now and then. Sometimes you might even get lucky and win a contest or two. I have won 2 free iPod touch games and a key to the Killzone 2 Beta from Twitter.

All in all I think that Twitter is a wonderful online family. I for one am glad that I came aboard this train. Now if I could just stop stalking my Twitter Grader Score it would be great… Come on 90%!!

Game & Watch, Reborn

0

So I had heard that Nintendo was releasing a compilation of all their old Game & Watch games to the “Nintendo Club” members. However I had no idea that someone had taken the time to crunch the code to have them put on the iPhone and iPod touch. Simply awesome!

These games will not, probably in any way, appeal to the crop of gamers that grew up knowing nothing earlier than a Gamecube or Playstation. These truely are for the “Old School” gamers out there. I can remember going to my local K-Mart and trying my best to talk my grandmother into getting the newest Game and Watch that came out. I believe it was a Donkey Kong version of the clam shell type, I could be wrong that was a long time ago.

Anyway, what these games lack in graphical prowess they more than make up for in nostalgia. Mr. Game and Watch brings back fond memories for me of the days when portable games were only these uncomplicated LCD overlay games. I have no idea how many were made but I know that if you try to buy an original G&W on ebay it will cost you a pretty penny now.

The site that is putting these together has about 6 of them done already. The one pictured above is called GW Helmet, and it’s free through iTunes. I don’t know how long they will last until Nintendo brings out the “Ban-Hammer” on them, but if you ever played them you may want to get ‘em while they’re hot.

The site is http://www.mobile1up.com . Have fun and don’t drown in the memories.
